Quarter 4, Week 5 of 10...Half-Way!

Mid-Quarter Grades will appear THIS WEEK! Check your Infinite Campus to make sure you have turned-in and earned a grade for all of your hard work! 
Read your IL book at home and complete the 6-page log by Monday, April 29!

Due Today: You should be at least 3/4 through your IL book (about 5 pages of the log)
Learning Target: RL.11-12.4 Determine the meanings of words or phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative or connotative meanings. W.11-12.2 Produce informative/explanatory pieces to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information.
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Finish reading or review that last few pages of  Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong. As you finish, write down at least four examples of imagery on your graphic organizer from the text that help you understand the topic you were asked to look for. Include page #s AND the exact words.
  2. After: Read Stockings together as a whole group
    • Add to any of the four columns of your foldable. If needed, attach another paper at this point.
  3. Then: Group-read: Church, The Man I Killed, Ambush, and Style
    • Divide the next RIGHT page of your INB into four columns. Title each section with one of the chapter titles above.
    • Summarize the chapter after you finish reading (at least three sentences).
    • MAKE SURE to include at least one example of imagery from the text in your summary, and an explanation of what it means.
  4. Next: Share your summary with people from each of the other groups
    • Copy the summary from each of the other groups in the section you created.
Target Practice: I understand how Tim O'Brien uses imagery to communicate feeling and tone in The Things They Carried. Fist-5?

Classwork
  1. Do Now: Begin Reading Speaking of Courage and Notes
    • Add to any of the four columns of your foldable. If needed, attach another paper at this point.
  2. After: Title the next LEFT and RIGHT pages Who is Norman Bowker? 
    • With your group, us the LEFT page to write discussion notes on these four topics about Norman Bowker:
      • What does he carry physically? Do these things change?
      • What does he carry emotionally? Do these things change?
      • How do his war buddies view him?
      • How does he view himself? Does this change?
      • Does learning about his hometown life change your view? Why or why not?
      • Is he a hero? Are there any in this book? Why or why not?
  3. Then: Use the RIGHT page to write a multi-paragraph analysis of Norman Bowker based on your notes. It should be at least four paragraphs:
    • Describe the person
    • Describe his struggle
    • Describe how he has changed or not throughout the book
    • Make a judgment about the man. Some options are: 
      • hero or not
      • good or bad
      • pitiable or not
      • likeable or not
      • or something else...
  4. Next: Reminder about EA 2 and the rest of the quarter...
    • Only two more classes on The Things They Carried
    • EA 2 is a group lesson based on your Independent Learning book. You may (1) be in a group of people who all read the same book OR (2) you may be in a group who read different books. If you choose #2, there must be something that your lesson does to prepare a reader for ANY of the books.
    • INB Check #9 MUST happen by Friday @ 2:15.
    • Mid-quarter grades will be arriving home soon.

  1. Do Now: Attach the EA 2 instruction sheet to the next LEFT page of your INB. Use the 3-read method to annotate it in the time provided.
  2. After: Example Lesson Idea: Expert Groups!
    • Write the following title at the top of the RIGHT page: Could I use this lesson idea to teach my topic? Write Expert Groups underneath the title. Write a three sentence response to the question at the top if the page. Whether you answer yes or no, explain why you answered that way and how it relates to your book.
  3. Then: Example Lesson Idea:Using Comic Strips to Tell a Story!
    • Draw a line under your last response.
    • Write the following title under the line: Could I use this lesson idea to teach my topic? Write Using Comic Strips to Tell a Story! underneath the title. Write a three sentence response to the question at the top if the page. Whether you answer yes or no, explain why you answered that way and how it relates to your book.
  4. Next: Begin working with a group to brainstorm ideas for your EA 2: Teaching a Lesson!
    • Write your ideas in space provided on your EA 2 instruction sheet
    • Determine which group member is going to MAKE A COPY of the lesson plan on Google Classroom. This person MUST share the document with the group AND is responsible for submitting for the group by the due date.
Target Practice: I know who is in my group for EA 2: Teach a Lesson! and we have brainstormed some fun ideas to teach our lesson. Fist-5?
