Learning Objective: RI.11-12.6, Determine an author's point of view or purpose. RI.11-12.1, Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis.
Classwork
- Do Now: Attach Quarter 2, Week 7 of 10 (Gobble, Gobble!) to the next LEFT PAGE of your notebook. Read and annotate the document.
- After: Fold the next RIGHT PAGE of your notebook in half, then in half again (4 columns). Title the page EA 2: Sample Speech Scoring. Write today's date at the top-right of the page. Title each column as follows: Ideas, Structure, Language, Target Practice. Copy today's target practice into the last column. Score at the end of class.
- Then: Individual scoring of the sample speech using the rubric. The speech is Proficient in each category. Your job is not to score, but to write in each column why it is proficient in that category using the language from the rubric. Annotate the rubric as you see fit (especially for unfamiliar words).
- Next: Roundtable discussion about EA 2, scoring the example speech, and how this activity relates to EA 1.
Target Practice: I can identify and analyze the skills and knowledge needed to effectively complete Embedded Assessment 2: Persuasive Speech. Fist-5?
Homework
- Remember to bring IR book to class on Wednesday! This is the last independent reading session of the quarter.
- Come to class on Wednesday with topic ideas that you might want to argue in your speech.

Classwork
- Do Now: 20 minute independent reading time with dialectical journal #5 (DJ #4 graded).
- After: Title the RIGHT PAGE of your notebook Unpacking Embedded Assessment 2: Persuasive Speech. Write today's date in the top-right corner. Copy the target practice below the title. Fold the page in half, then in half again. Title the columns from left to right: Option 1, Option 2, Option 3, and Option 4.
- Then: Click on this link to view 301 Arguable topics from the New York Times. After researching as many topics as you can, write four that interest you and why. Create a copy of this Annotated Bibliography template and place links to any relevant sources you might use later.
- Next: Staple Speech Outline on the LEFT PAGE. If you have zeroed-in on a topic, you can begin outlining now.
Homework
- Find at least two more sources and place them on the Annotated Bibliography by next class. It would be a good idea to continue revising your outline throughout the research process.
- IR Creative Activity due-date is moved to December 11!
