Learning Target: RI.11-12.5 Analyze in detail how an author's ideas or claims are developed and refined. SL.11-12.4 Present findings clearly, concisely, and logically for listeners to follow. 
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Turn to the next section in your 5 Subject Interactive Notebook. Label it Quarter 3. Staple the Quarter 3 Goals and Expectations to the first right page. Staple Quarter 3, Week 1 of 11 to the next left page. Read and annotate Quarter 3, Week 1 of 11 ONLY.
  2. After: Complete the Temperature Check (link at the top of this page)
  3. Then: Jigsaw the Quarter 3 Goals and Expectations (star, underline/circle, annotate)
  4. Next: Small Group Activity on WB p. 50: Define 'truck' in terms of...
    • examples
    • What is not 'truck'?
    • What is it's function? What purpose does 'truck' serve?
    • What kinds or types of 'truck' are there?
Target Practice: I understand and can explain what is expected of me in Quarter 3. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Arrive to class tomorrow with at least three ideas you might want to write about for EA 1: the Definition Essay.
Thursday, January 7
Learning Target: RI.11-12.5 Analyze in detail how an author's ideas or claims are developed and refined. SL.11-12.4 Present findings clearly, concisely, and logically for listeners to follow. 
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Label the next right page of your notebook Topic Ideas for Definition Essay. Place today's date at the top-left. Copy the target practice below the title. Fold the page in half, then in half again (4 columns. Title the columns: example, not, purpose, and types. Complete the columns throughout class.
  2. After: Jigsaw the blue EA 1: Definition Essay sheet (stapled to the next left page).
  3. Then: Complete the During Reading activity while reading What Is Freedom? on WB p.48.
  4. Next: Share your findings with the group. Add ideas to the columns in your notebook.
Target Practice: I understand and can explain what skills and knowledge are needed to complete the Definition Essay. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Complete the Notebook entry today for at least two more ideas (a total of four or more). Circle your top choice and be prepared to defend your decision on Monday.
A Note About Independent Reading: Begin reading a book of your choice, but there will be no dialectical journal or creative expression due at the end of the quarter. Instead, you will be leading a book-talk. More information will come next week...
