Defintion Essay Graphic Organizer and Works Cited Due Friday!
Monday, January 11
Learning Target: RI.11-12.2 Determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text. W.11-12.1 Use evidence to write arguments in support of claims.
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Staple the Quarter 3 Goals and Expectations to the first right page. Read and annotate the document. Title the right page Planning My Definition Essay. 
  2. After: Read and annotate John McCain's essay on Patriotism in the Springboard Workbook
  3. Then: (10 minute timed-writing) Defend the statement that John McCain's essay on Patriotism is a definition essay. use your knowledge of the four parts of a definition essay and EXACT QUOTES from the article to support your ideas.
  4. Next: Definition essay topic commitment and research time using the KKHS Library Homepage
Target Practice: I can identify the parts of a definition essay and use that knowledge to plan my own. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Presearch your essay topic in preparation for the planning session on Wednesday (presearch does NOT need to be recorded)
  • Reminder: ONLY SOURCES FROM THE KKHS LIBRARY WILL BE ACCEPTABLE

Learning Target: W.11-12.5 Develop and strengthen writing through planning.
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Staple the graphic organizer to the left page. Write research questions that you will need to answer for each part of the essay.
  2. After: Exploring literary resources for research using poems in Springboard Workbook
  3. Then: Continue researching your topic for sources to help you define it through exemplification, classification, negation, and function.
  4. Next: (10 minute timed writing) write the first paragraph of your essay.
Target Practice: I have planned my definition essay and am ready to write a draft. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Create the Definition Essay document in your Google Drive and type the header, heading, title (Definition Essay), and the first paragraph that you wrote in class.
Friday, January 14
Learning Target: W.11-12.5 Develop and strengthen writing through planning. 
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Create an online graphic organizer and Works Cited for your essay
  2. After: Research, plan, or write a draft of your definition essay
  3. Then: Good Sources vs. Bad using pp. 6 and 32 in the Springboard Workbook
  4. Next: Submit the online graphic organizer and Works Cited through the link at the top of the blog.
Target Practice: I can complete a first draft of my essay by next class. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Continue writing your essay. A formal draft with Works Cited page is due by the end of class on Tuesday.
A Note About Independent Reading: Begin reading a book of your choice, but there will be no dialectical journal or creative expression due at the end of the quarter. Instead, you will be leading a book-talk. More information will come next week...
