Quarter 1, Week 2 of 10

Take the documents from the round table on your way in. 
Make sure electronics are off and away in your bag.
Drop your bag in the front of the room before taking your seat in a group of 3 or 4.

Monday, August 3
Learning Objective: RI.11-12.3 Analyze a complex set of ideas. SL.11-12.1 Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions. L.11-12.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words. 
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Skip to the second section of your Interactive Notebook. Staple the Week 2 of 10 sheet to the first left-side page. On the right page, write today's date at the top-right corner. Label today's entry: What is the Pursuit of Happiness?
  2. After: Fold the page in half, making two columns. Label the LEFT column Happiness IS... Label the right column Happiness is NOT... With your table group, make a list of at least FIVE items in each column. During the whole group share-out after, add at least THREE more items to each column.
  3. Then: Review general policies, weekly homework sheet, hall pass, Springboard Workbook, and other classroom business
  4. Next:  Interactive Notebook Cover
    • fold into 4 quadrants:
      • Top-left: personality animal/s (no more than two)
      • Top-right: biggest fear (graphic representation)
      • Bottom-right: dream for the future
      • Bottom-left: personal information (Full Name, Junior, American Lit./Expository Writing I, Period #)
Target Practice: I can collaborate with small and large groups to identify and explain The Pursuit of Happiness. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Complete Interactive Notebook cover for Wednesday
  • Think about a book or film that makes you think of The Pursuit of Happiness and be prepared to talk/write about it on Wednesday (we may have Socratic Seminar).
  • Read and sign the classroom contract/syllabus with your parents or guardians (return by next Friday)
Wednesday, August 5

Classwork
  1. Do Now: Attach the directions for EA 1: Personal Essay to the next left-side page in your Interactive Notebook. Write today's date at the top-right of the next page.  Title today's journal: How do I show proficiency on EA 1: Personal Essay?
  2. After: With your table group, read and annotate the assigned section of the directions for EA 1: Personal Essay. During the whole group share-out, mark the sheet when you are directed by your classmates.
  3. Then: Turn to page 172 in your Springboard Workbook. In your groups annotate/complete all three sections: Making Connections, Essential Questions, Unpacking Embedded Assessment 1.  Prepare to share in a large group/Socratic Seminar.
  4. Next:  Fold your Interactive Notebook entry for today into four columns. Label them: Making Connections, Essential Questions, Unpacking EA 1, and Target Practice. Complete the graphic organizer on your own.

Friday, August 7 (Library)

Classwork
  1. Do Now: Write today's date in the top-right corner of the next RIGHT page in your Interactive Notebook. Title today's entry: Independent Reading and the KKHS Library. As you listen to Mrs. Arcas, write down at least 3 questions you had answered OR that you'd like to ask.  Leave space for the answers.
  2. After: Check-out Into the Wild text and create personalized bags
  3. Then: Preview assignment options for independent reading 
  4. Next: 30 minute reading block 
  5. Time-Permitting: Student Survey (click link at the top of this blog)
Target Practice: I understand and can explain what I need to do for independent reading this quarter. Fist-5?
Homework
  • On the next left-side page of your Interactive Notebook, write a poem that expresses your personal credo about life (Title it Personal Credo). We will use it on Monday during class. You may click the link above to get ideas, or click here to watch Baz Luhrman's music video.
  • Create EA 1: Personal Essay Google Doc in your school drive (share it with wfisher@kkhs.k12.hi.us, kherendeen@kkhs.k12.hi.us, and one other student in THIS class)
  • Begin reading Into the Wild (first IR check in two weeks- Friday, August 21)
  • Read and sign the classroom contract/syllabus with your parents or guardians (return by next Friday)
