Monday, August 24
Learning Target: RI.11-12.2 Determine two or more central ideas of a text. W.11-12.5 Develop and strengthen writing as needed through revision.
Classwork
  1. Do Now: On the next LEFT PAGE of your Notebook, attach 'Quarter 1, Week 5 of 10.' Read and annotate the paper for items that you think are of importance. On the RIGHT PAGE, write today's date at the top-right corner. Title the entry for today Self-Scoring the Personal Essay.
  2. After: Fold the RIGHT PAGE in half, then in half again.  Title the columns: Ideas, Structure, Use of Language, and Target Practice. Score your essay in each category, then choose one bullet from each to focus on improving today. Copy that bullet in the column below your score.
  3. Then: 20 minute silent writing
  4. Next: Read A View from Mt. Ritter on p.293. In different colors, highlight at least five sections that show how the writer felt (response) and what he learned (reflection) from the experience.
  5. Time-Permitting: Identify response and reflection in personal essays
Target Practice: I can read a personal essay for response and reflection, and use that understanding to revise my personal essay. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Attach Socratic Seminar Participant Packet to the next LEFT PAGE in your Notebook. By next class, develop at least 5 open-ended questions for each column on the question sheet on the following topic: Into the Wild as Narrative About the Pursuit of Happiness.
  • Revise personal essay by Friday @ midnight

  2. After: Form teams of three and review rules of the seminar (Click here to see full packet)
  3. Then: 3 round Socratic Seminar on Into the Wild as Narrative About the Pursuit of Happiness (5-7-5)
  4. Next: Reflection
