  1. Do Now: Your  EA 2 instruction sheet should be attached to the LEFT page in your INB. Title the RIGHT page What's my Favorite Way to Learn? Choose ONE of these four: listen, read, watch, play. Think about the last fun thing you learned. In the time you're given, write about how you learned it. Be specific! Use as much SENSORY detail as possible.
  2. After: Share your "learning story" with your group. As you listen to the others, consider which one is your favorite. If not yours, write a short summary of the story beneath your own.
  3. Then: Example Lesson Idea:Using Comic Strips to Tell a Story!
    • Title the next LEFT page: Could I use this lesson idea to teach my topic? 
    • Write Using Comic Strips to Tell a Story! underneath the page title. Write a three sentence response to the question at the top if the page.

    • Write your ideas in space provided on your EA 2 instruction sheet

    • Divide the left page into four sections. Label each section with one of the following:
      • Morality 
      • Truth 
      • Justice 
      • Pressure
    • Write at least two SPECIFIC themes you found in the book for each category. Include either page #s or explanation for each.
  3. Then: Read Good Form
    • Add to any of the four columns of your foldable. If needed, attach another paper at this point.
  4. Next: Divide the RIGHT page into four sections. Give the page a subtitle: Socratic Seminar. Label the sections with the following titles:

    • Add to any of the four columns of your foldable. If needed, attach another paper at this point.
  3. Then: Group-read: Church, The Man I Killed, Ambush, and Style
    • Divide the next RIGHT page of your INB into four columns. Title each section with one of the chapter titles above.
    • Summarize the chapter after you finish reading (at least three sentences).
    • MAKE SURE to include at least one example of imagery from the text in your summary, and an explanation of what it means.
  4. Next: Share your summary with people from each of the other groups
    • Copy the summary from each of the other groups in the section you created.

    • With your group, us the LEFT page to write discussion notes on these four topics about Norman Bowker:
      • What does he carry physically? Do these things change?
      • What does he carry emotionally? Do these things change?
      • How do his war buddies view him?
      • How does he view himself? Does this change?
      • Does learning about his hometown life change your view? Why or why not?
      • Is he a hero? Are there any in this book? Why or why not?
  3. Then: Use the RIGHT page to write a multi-paragraph analysis of Norman Bowker based on your notes. It should be at least four paragraphs:
    • Describe the person
    • Describe his struggle
    • Describe how he has changed or not throughout the book
    • Make a judgment about the man. Some options are: 
      • hero or not
      • good or bad
      • pitiable or not
      • likeable or not
      • or something else...
  4. Next: Reminder about EA 2 and the rest of the quarter...
    • Only two more classes on The Things They Carried
    • EA 2 is a group lesson based on your Independent Learning book. You may (1) be in a group of people who all read the same book OR (2) you may be in a group who read different books. If you choose #2, there must be something that your lesson does to prepare a reader for ANY of the books.

  2. After: Think about a story that is important to you. It may be your own, or one that has been told to you by a parent or grandparent. Write the story in your INB during the time provided. 
    • Story should be written on the next RIGHT page of the INB. Title the page My Story.
    • After writing the story, respond to the following questions on the previous LEFT page of your INB
        • Does writing the story down change your perspective? 
        • Did you notice details that you hadn't before? 
        • Were there details you left out?
  3. Then: Group-read: Friends, Enemies, or The Dentist
    • Take notes on the next LEFT page of your INB as you read.
    • Discuss the chapter with your group after finishing.
    • Write a one-paragraph group summary of the chapter on the next RIGHT page of your INB.

    • As you finish reading the section, write down at least four examples of imagery from the text that help you understand the topic you were asked to look for.
  3. Then: Share examples with others who were looking for something different, and write down examples for the two sections that you DID NOT read for.
